Nintendo Switch Discussion

The NX (I refuse to call it Nintendo Switch because NX is such a better name) is great. It holds a lot of potential. Especially if you look at it from a developer's point of view. I'm going to try my damn hardest to get a license to develop for the NX. Also, I don't see this as a multiplayer console, I see it as a handheld with console as a second thought. It just might replace the Wii U.

NX is edgy. Switch Matches the fun free style of Nintendo more imo. Also the Wii U is already dead. Replacing it wouldn't even be hard.

The Wii U honestly feels like a Switch prototype.
Good: -somewhat portable -single-system multiplayer Bad: -(could replace 3DS (which would be very bad because it has FEWER features)) -capacitance touch screen
AFAIK capacitance is the only way to make multitouch, which is a total must IMO. And you can make a nice capacitance stylus anyway, which I'm certain Nintendo will be including (it'd be very non-Nintendo of them not to.)

I feel like capacitance touch screen wouldn't be much of a problem since you generally either use your stylus or (blech) your finger for touching the screen. If you use anything else you run the risk of damaging the screen. And capacitance is probably the simplest way of implementing multi touch anyway.

Hoping for some sort of backwards compatability with 3ds at least, even though the cart slot looks incompatible (fewer pins). If not bc, pray for the unlikely smilbasic port!

I think it looks great. It will make it so much easier to play multiplayer with friends. 3DS requires other players have a system, and Wii U would be a pain to take some where. This would eliminate both problems! I really just hope it has a touch screen... Because no touch screen would most likely mean no SmileBASIC! D: [quote =12Me21]How big is it? (also why has nobody commented on the lack of a d-pad? I'm sure it won't be a huge problem now that everything uses the analog sticks anyway, but it's one of those things that I expected people to make a big deal over) Yeah, I noticed that too, but the Pro Controller actually does have a proper D-pad, so there's not much to worry about.

If it has day one Castlevania virtual console, I'll buy it.

"virtual console day one"

Why I think Nintendo Switch doesn't have a touch screen.
  • In the trailer, you never see anyone touch the screen. The actors always use the buttons to do stuff.
  • Anytime you see a screen in the trailer, you never see any kind of interface where you have to touch the screen.
  • AFAIK there is no stylus.
  • The console doesn't have two separate screens to deal with like the Wii U: the gamepad's screen displays the exact same thing the TV would.
  • A friend of mine brought up a good point: you can't use the screen when playing in docked mode, so why bother making a touch screen.
(EDIT) Quote from IGN: When asked if the Nintendo Switch will have touchscreen support, Nintendo declined to comment. "We will make additional announcements about the Nintendo Switch hardware later, before the launch of the product," Nintendo told IGN.

who are you quotingIt could be to avoid early claims that it's just a low effort meme tablet at this point

This is what it was thinking as well, but I mean, they could still use a toucscreen in certain cases, they'd just need to make it sure it wouldn't hamper the experience. For example, Mario Maker could still work, but you could only build levels with the NS in portable mode, or in SmileBASIC you could only use the touchscreen keyboard on portable mode, but you could still really play your creations in both modes. Obviously it wouldn't be as convenient as those things age on Wii U, but is hate to see those abilities striped entirely.

Oh Reddit, what would we do without you.

I personally really like the whole Micro SD Storage thing. It makes portable games even cooler.

ALthough will the console have both Discs and Micro SDs?

Ooh! Maybe that's what the base console is for! Backwards compatability. With a disc drive. It would be local use only but it's something, right?

That means extra hardware in the base and thus higher prices. I doubt it.

The console will use cartridges for the games. And no backwards compatibility as the GCN, Wii and Wii U were powered by PPC, and the Switch is powered by a NVIDIA Tegra. But there's probably Virtual Console for those. Or ports.
