  • #1 ✎ 1110 randomous Owner Robot Hidden Easter Eggs Second Year My account is over 2 years old Website Drawing I like to draw! Hobbies I want SmileBASIC Source to be a place where people are comfortable and treated kindly. I want people to be able to get help when they need it without feeling bad about themselves. It would be nice if everyone kept these things in mind when talking to each other, no matter if you're talking to a new or old user. For instance, if someone asks for help and you know the answer, try to help in a patient, kind manner. Remember, just because it's obvious to you doesn't mean it should be obvious to them. If a question has already been answered, go look for the post and direct them there. It doesn't take long to do; even if you want people to help themselves, it would still be nice of you to find the correct answer, then tell them how you found it. If a question is too broad to answer, just let them know, or give them a good starting point. Try not to talk down to people. Be positive and gentle when you can; it's not fun being shot down or made to feel unworthy. I know it's hard to watch people make mistakes, especially when they don't realize it. Instead of putting them down, find a nice way to tell them that you think they're making a mistake. If they're dead-set on continuing, let them continue. If they succeed, they'll have done something potentially amazing. If they fail, hopefully they'll learn something. These aren't a set of rules; I'm not going to make it a "rule" that you have to be helpful and kind. Just keep in mind that we're such a small community that each user has the power to shape the general attitude and atmosphere of the whole place. Have fun coding! Posted

This should be how everyone treats each other in regular life but sadly it's not :(

Thank you so much randomous. I completely agree with you, and sometimes with my lack of knowledge I may be ignored or my questions sarcastically answered. Don't worry, I'm not completely innocent either, so I'll try harder to be a kind, helpful person as well.

  • #4 ✎ 32 Unclesporky I can't speak for randomouscrap but I would say try not to interpret a lack of response as people ignoring you. It's a small community, it could be that no one saw the post, or those who are online don't go through the forums regularly, or no one legitimately knows, or people who have seen it aren't interested in the question posed by the topic title and didn't realize it would be something easy to answer if they'd clicked on it. Even if a question is ignored, that's better than the alternative of posting sarcastically or rudely. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. And if you are frustrated by a question going unanswered, remember to try to find the answer yourself too! Google the question, maybe even in a more general sense so that you could learn from an example in another programming language or platform, etc. Search the forums, read the SmileBASIC reference, and play with the commands in the program. Rather than trying to use a complicated set of commands the first time you're learning about them, try to set up a bare minimum test of those commands, just to get them to work at all (try examples from the SB reference) and then tweak the parameters to see how it works. I disagree with you. There are people of all ages on this website, who don't act the same as some of the members who are older. I was that kid on the petit computer wikia, and I could be that way still. So some children trying to communicate, and you replying in a sarcastic manner, isn't helpful or friendly.

Ah yes, "Here at SmileBasicSource, we want to promote an environment where people with dumb ideas are mercilessly mocked for their stupidity and shamed into silence, because it's our burden, our responsibility, to toughen people up and introduce them to the real world, where they won't get any favors or be coddled." Gotta phrase it in such a way so it sounds like you're actually helping them in some way, so people might not realize it's just an excuse to be a jerk to people...

For censorship to exist there would've had to have been free speech in the first place. Forum admins can choose to moderate speech any way they like. They could decide they hate the XBox here and ban anyone who so much as mentions it, if they wanted. Wouldn't be a productive policy, but hey, it's their prerogative. Heck, if they wanted, they could decide to ban obvious channers causing trouble in threads about community guidelines, and it wouldn't be censorship, because they set the rules for speech in the first place. If you want a forum that pulls no punches and weeds out the weak, you are free to make your own and moderate it any way you choose. But your opinions do not matter here.

I'm still trying to grasp the basics. Programming Strength hey pirate, i'm not sure if you noticed the original post at all, but you're kind of going against the intention. this thread isn't some kindergarten class teaching you to be nice, it's just asking that you actually show some decency when someone needs help with their code (or whatever it may be). this community is already really small and i don't see that improving if new or old members take on whatever attitude you're using here. and as a site note your track record for forum posts isn't helping you in the slightest Posted
