What ARE the chat rules.

I've been in chat for a while and I've noticed that there aren't any basic rules, all we get is a warning stating that Lumage can ban people and stuff. A conversation with a fellow chat member caused me to make this thread: http://imgur.com/xrOigxk I don't know if we are simply going by the 'morals' rules where we have to be nice, because a lot of times we break those morals lashing out at other. (I would past infinite tears ascii but not now) EDIT 1: Hylian gave some really nice rules: *No spamming *No talking about inappropriate subjects (like killing people, sex, etc.) *No linking to viruses or causing viruses on the chat *No banning for no reason or a small reason *No bashing on religion or opinions PS: self moderated practically means "majority rules"

Don't put boxes on my face.

Well since this is a small community I'll just say go in and expect the worse to happen at all time :p but I guess we need some rules and should be enforced. That way if/when the community grows we won't have it like a WW scenario in the chatroom with fbombs flying everywhere...

How about, um. *No spamming *No talking about inappropriate subjects (like killing people, sex, etc.) *No linking to viruses or causing viruses on the chat *No banning for no reason or a small reason *No bashing on religion or opinions And i think that'll get us started

that seems about right

i had an idea. how about this >No spamming (punishment for breaking rule: *1 hour ban) >No talking about inappropriate subjects (like killing people, sex, etc.) (punishment for breaking rule: *1 hour ban) >No linking to viruses or causing viruses on the chat (punishment for breaking rule: *5 hour ban) >No banning for no reason or a small reason (punishment for breaking rule: *10 hour ban) >No bashing on religion or opinions (punishment for breaking rule: *3 hour ban) *varies on how much the rule was broken

causes a computer ruining virus is totally worth only 5 hrs

I'm aware as of everyone, that the chatroom is basicly a war torn area ment for peace. It reminds me a lot of USA problem with the north and south with slavery. In the end USA stayed united after the war and slavery was abolished. Now, the chat has a similar problem but with rules. I myself dislike the ideas of rules but see why others call for rules. What I say is just leave the no rules tab and make a new tab enforced with rules and a system that plays a minigame I guess. The more the user cusses and what not the higher their points go up and that informs the people with stars. That is my idea for what will lower the tensions in the chat. Although it wouldn't completely abolish the tensions it sure will lower it. I'm just here posting ideas :p

Your analogy is also against you because what you're proposing is that we should make the same mistake the USA did. At first they separated like your suggesting, and then that only caused problems later on causing the civil war. I believe that the chat should have basic rules to follow.

Look, I haven't seen anyone with any sort of credibility relating to this kind of thing so you're getting me. I'm a former site staff member (I was the "assistant dev man" but with that comes moderation privileges). You must not have read the big warning message that comes up every day on the chat. It claims that the chat is self-moderated and that any major issues are to be directed either to a present staff member or the staff contact at smilebasicsource@gmail.com. What does self-moderated mean? It means "act like functioning human beings and resolve things yourself." Much of the discussion in this thread seems to come down to "how to stop people from saying things I don't like." Here's an answer: if you don't like what they're saying, ignore them. We have the Ignore button for a reason. The staff has much better things to do with their time than babysit everyone. The decision to make the chat self-moderated with a warning came after the classic ArcPh1re fiasco, because things like that are basically impossible to moderate. If there's an actual problem, report it via email or hit up a present staff member if they're online. The lack of rules for chat is because we expect you to be able to reason like humans.

The thing is slacker, people don't act like a normal person would whenever they are on the internet. People think they can do anything they want and not get in trouble. It's a common mindset, and this cannot be proven wrong. The chat can be self-moderated but it does need basic rules. It doesn't necessarily need rules on EVERY single issue, but it does need rules to fix the main issues.

With a self moderated chat things are most likely to get out of hands very quickly, and it will probably take a long time to recover. With defined rules people have a better chance of enjoying a nicer community.

It's never going to get as bad as it once was again. The circumstances of our worst places were as perfect as an alignment of the planets. You're all just trying to cry wolf about problems that aren't there.

Considering there WAS a bad point, it is very likely that its going to happen considering we have a 'you decide the rules' mindset.

I've already said what I need to about this.

As Alex has said, it's a self moderated chat. Any extreme behavior is dealt with on a per-issue basis by whatever moderator is there at the time. If there are no moderators, deal with the situation yourself or leave the chat if you're so offended. I'm sorry if different moderators have different leniency, but we can't have a set of rules if we can't enforce them. I can't get enough moderators to have at least one in the chat at all times, and even if I could have enough, I wouldn't be able to get them all to have the same strictness. I'm not going to take on any more moderators, sorry. Nobody here is mature enough to handle being a moderator for this particular community, including me. If you are in the chat and something comes up that you can't handle, these are your options:
  • LEAVE THE CHAT
  • GET A MODERATOR OR SEND AN EMAIL
  • STOP WHINING AND DEAL WITH THE SITUATION YOURSELF

I'm confused. Did this subject come up because something happened? We tried doing moderated, rule-like things in the past and that's when things got out of hand. I don't necessarily think the setup was to blame, but it was changed to the self-moderated setup we have now. It puts responsibility in the hands of the users, which I think is more sensible. If nothing bad is happening, why do we want to change it?

Brilliance, come into chat and I can PM you what's going on. Nothing actually happened.

Still though, we should try to create some form of realization that rules would create a better chat room.
